Arnold Bennett's 'Tiger'.
Folk music on a Monday night.

The Campaign For Real Ale - Pubs in Time initiative was launched during National Pubs Week in February 2006 and aimed to give (overdue) recognition to a select band of pubs across the country, writes Mervyn Edwards, Author and Spokesman for the Potteries Pub Preservation Group. Only a handful of hostelries were awarded a heritage plaque by which to mark significant events of national importance which had taken place on these sites.

One such pub was the Leopard in Burslem on account of the meeting there between the canal promoters on March 8th, 1765. James Brindley, Josiah Wedgwood and others met there to expedite the scheme for the construction of what would later become known as the Trent and Mersey Canal (1776-77). Upon completion, this was 93 miles long, and as part of the growing network of canals in the 18th century, it became one of the transportation motorways of the age.

On Monday, 20th February, CAMRA and Potteries Pub Preservation Group members and the general public gathered at the Leopard to see the official unveiling of the plaque, which was received by landlord John Murphy. This award should establish the Leopard as a must-visit location on the Burslem tourist trail.
